Use of Shop Facilities and Services
- The shops are only for extension, research, and teaching activities.
- All persons needing access to a shop area must attend and complete
Safety Training.
- Eye protection (safety spectacles or cover goggles) and disposable
hearing protection are provided free of charge to all Department personnel
upon their initial employment. This equipment is considered the property
of the individual employee. Replacement equipment will be the responsibility
of the employee. NOTE: The ANSI-approved safety spectacles fit over
a pair of prescription glasses, BUT the safety spectacles may scratch
the plastic lenses used in most prescription glasses. It is recommended
that an individual wearing prescription glasses use the cover goggles
on top of prescription glasses.
- Each employee shall use the personal protective equipment when working
with any of the tools, equipment, and facilities in the shop. Safety
instructions, more specialized safety equipment, and reminders are mounted
on or near the tools, equipment, and facilities. If there is ever any
doubt concerning the safe, proper use of any of the tools, equipment,
or facilities, please check with the Engineering Associate.
- An employee may not permit people outside the Department to use any
of the Department's equipment, facilities, or supplies.
- If damage occurs to any instrument, tool, or piece of equipment while
in use, please report it to the person having responsibility for the
item.
- No work activity shall take place unless a faculty member or shop
supervisor is physically present in the work area. Non-employee undergraduates
must undergo training as outlined in the most recent issue of the department's
Safety and Laboratory Safety Guidelines.
- In cases of extensive or complex fabrication, shop personnel may help
with the work. Use of shop personnel must be arranged by the supervisor
in advance. Employees should not use general shop supplies (steel, plastic,
pipe, wood, etc.) without prior approval of the Engineering Associate.
Tool and Research Room Management
- Tools, equipment, and instruments used away from the building on a
specific research project must be checked out for any periods of time
longer than eight hours. In such cases, designate on the check-out sheet
the date that they will be returned.
- Convenient check-out sheets are provided for checking tools out of
the research shop. Prompt return of tools will be a rule. Remember others
may want to use the tools you have taken.
- Do not attempt to sharpen or adjust tools and equipment with which
you are not familiar. The Engineering Associate will assist in such
cases.
- Tools and equipment in teaching areas are not to be removed from these
areas except after having checked with the area leader.
