TAE 913 – Safety and Health for Turf and Ag Technicians

An overview of agricultural and industrial safety and health topics as they relate to turfgrass and agricultural machinery technicians. Special attention is given to the reduction of specific risks related to the tasks of the technicians.

TAE 911 – Engines I

Examine basic principles of two and four-stroke cycle internal combustion engines. Lubrication, cooling, governor, and fuel systems are discussed in lecture and laboratory format. Modes of component failure and engine diagnosis.

TAE 915 – Introduction to Turf and Ag Equipment

An introduction and assessment of typical turfgrass and agricultural equipment currently in use. Troubleshooting, identification of systems, repair, safety, preventative maintenance and reel maintenance will be covered.

TAE 914 – Power Trains

Components of power transfer from prime mover to final use are examined.

CMP 912 – Computer Basics

Introduction to basic computing and the Penn State computing systems.

MAT 910 – Math for Turf and Ag Technicians

An overview of mathematical concepts needed for the study of turf and agricultural equipment. Problem solving is the emphasis of the course.

 

Second Session

TAE 928 – Hydraulic Applications

Application of fluid power to turf and agricultural equipment. Component function and maintenance issues are covered.

CMM 927 – Communications and Public Relations

Communications and public relations as they relate to interactions with other workers and clients of your place of work.

TAE 929 – Electrical Systems

Electrical topics related to turf and agricultural equipment and shops. Systems for mobile equipment and shop equipment are covered.

CMP 922 – Computer Applications

Use of computing skills for turf and agricultural applications.

TAE 921– Engines II

A continuation of Engines I with a more in-depth look at engine function, troubleshooting and diagnosis.

BUS 926 – Business Concepts

Business skills related to turf and agricultural equipment technician's tasks.

 

Third Session

TAE 939 – Electronic Applications

Electronic components and circuits used on agricultural and turfgrass equipment are investigated. Instrumentation, current applications and troubleshooting of common systems are included.

BUS 936 – Business Applications

Applications of business concepts to real-world scenarios.

AGR 930 – Agronomy / Turfgrass Principles

General agronomy of turfgrass including establishment and care of sites.

TAE 935 – Ag and Turf Equipment Operation

Safe and effective operation of agricultural or turfgrass equipment. Hands-on experience with different types of units is provided.

CMM 937 – Written Communications

Writing for in-house and external communication. These communications may be with supervisors, co-workers, distributors, clients, and others in the industry.

TAE 934 – Power Units

Power transfer, traction and weight transfer in equipment.

 

Fourth Session

TAE 948 – Electro-hydraulics and Hydrostatics

Electrical and electronic control of hydraulic components and systems. Hydrostatic drives for small tractors and turfgrass equipment.

TAE 943 – Shop Operations

Overview of shop operation including principles of fabrication and labor management.

TAE 945 – Machinery Management

Function and operation of agricultural and turfgrass machines; energy, quality, and loss considerations; selection and utilization.

TAE 940 – Water Management and Irrigation Systems

Water management systems and practices including surface drainage, open channels, and erosion, subsurface drainage and irrigation.

TAE 946 – Inventory Control

Management of parts, machinery, labor inventories using software and traditional techniques.

TAE 942 – Diagnoses, Repair and Maintenance

Overall diagnosis and troubleshooting for agricultural and turfgrass equipment. Systems include electrical, electronic, power and hydraulic systems.
