Dennis J. Murphy, Ph.D., CSP Professor, Program Leader
Dennis provides overall program leadership for agricultural safety and health research, extension and teaching. This includes agricultural injury surveillance, developing and evaluating methods of hazard and risk reduction, and increasing child safety on the farm. Dennis sits on a number of committees regarding agricultural safety and health issues and has authored numerous articles and two books on the subject

Jim Hilton

 

James W. Hilton, Ph.D. Associate Professor, Program Leader Associate
Jim provides leadership for several safety research and outreach programs and activities. He is most closely associated wtih tractor and machinery safety programs.

Bill Harshman

 


William (Bill) Harshman, B.S.
  Research Assistant
Bill joined the staff after 32 years as an extension educator and agricultural teacher at the secondary level. His work is primarily with the Agricultural Safety and Health Best Management Practices (ASHBMP) project plus youth tractor and machinery safety. Additional experience in agricultural lending and landscape contracting provide additional foundation for his work as instructor in the Turfgrass and Ag Equipment Technician Program.

Dave Hill

 

Dave Hill, B.S., NREMT-P  Sr. Extension Associate
Dave is program Director for Managing Agricultural Emergencies and provides leadership for developing and implementing educational programs for farm family members as well as emergency service personnel related to farm emergencies. His background includes 25 years of EMS and extension education, including teaching agricultural rescue techniques.

Sally Maud Robertson

 

Sally Maud Robertson, B.A.  Research Associate
Sally Maud joined the staff in 1990 bringing a background in social services and health education. Her primary research foci are in the psycho-social aspects of agricultural safety and health such as investigating the emotional and social impacts of farm work injuries and exploring the intersection of religious/spiritual beliefs and risk reduction. She is also currently working on a project to evaluate a "safe play areas on farms" demonstration.

Doug Schaufler

 

Doug Schaufler, P.E., Ph.D.  Instructor
Doug currently coordinates the data collection and utilization for the Agricultural Safety and Health Best Management Practices project. He works closely with the insurance company which is a partner in the project. He's been working with Agricultural Safety and Health at Penn State since 1991 and has previously worked with Pennsylvania AgrAbility. He also teaches in the Turfgrass and Agriculture Equipment Technician Program.

Sam Steel

 

Sam Steel , Ed. D.  Sr. Research Associate
Sam recently re-joined the PSU Ag Safety and Health Team after 14 years with the National Safety Council as their Agricultural Safety and Health Manager. Sam is responsible for the development and dissemination of a new generation of hazard audit tools on agricultural chemicals and fuels for the agricultural industry. He is a former high school agriculture and horticulture instructor, county agricultural agent, and has extensive experience in the "green industry" private-sector. Sam also provides assistance for Penn State's new Outreach Center of Excellence project on agricultural safety and health.

Aaron Yoder

 

Aaron M. Yoder, Ph.D.  Instructor
Aaron came back to the PSU ABE department in 2001. Dr. Yoder splits his time between teaching and research in the areas of agricultural safety and health and turfgrass and agricultural equipment. His teaching activities include courses in hazard identification and control in production agriculture and related businesses and safety and health for the Turfgrass and Agriculture Equipment Technician Program. His research activities include agricultural safety and health education and program development, as well as, injury surveillance and tracking.
